I recently spent a week in Fraser Island, the biggest sand island in the world, working on a documentary. Just a short distance off the Queensland shore, it was a very quick barge ride at sunrise from Inskip Point:

There are many dingoes on Fraser Island and they are all pure blood. They roam the island looking for food, mostly solo, but sometimes in packs. Don’t try and pat them, and never leave a toddler alone around these island dogs.

An early stop was McKenzie Lake, which is beautiful on a clear day. Get in early when it’s lonely and quiet. Soon you will find it busy with tourists. This is a screenshot from the documentary:

A few weeks earlier, a yacht found itself in trouble just off the coast and the occupants, including a cat, were rescued by helicopter. The yacht eventually washed ashore where it still lies and probably will for a long time.

Indian Head is a great place to take in some spectacular views:

There’s also the SS Maheno wreck which washed ashore during a cyclone many years ago. It’s a significant tourist attraction now:

A popular swimming location is Champagne Pools.

And up North is a great location to catch a fabulous sunset:
